Founded in 1957 under the maiden name of Manipal Engineering College, the
institution acquired its present name in 1974. A reflection of the metamorphosis
in its character, the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) began taking engineering
science to new heights. MIT is today known for excellence, not just for producing
India's top class engineers, but also as a centre for research and specialised studies
in engineering science.Among the first self-financed colleges in the country, MIT which started with only one discipline, civil engineering, today offers graduation in eleven disciplines and postgraduation in nine.
The institute has been tuned to real world problems and priorities, and aims at offering to society engineers on par with their counterparts anywhere in the world. In almost 44 years of its existence, over 11,000 graduates and 400 post graduates have emerged from the portals of MIT Manipal. While some of them have gone on to make a mark for themselves in top notch companies in India and abroad, others have pursued academics at reputed universities in India, America and other countries.
